According to the Hospital Authority, an average of over 3,000 people die from stroke in Hong Kong each year, making it the fourth leading cause of death in the city. Patients are typically over 50 years old, and the age of stroke sufferers has been declining in recent years. The aftereffects of a stroke make the road to recovery long and arduous for patients and their families. Therefore, October 29th of each year is designated World Stroke Awareness Day. The goal is to raise public awareness of stroke, care for stroke patients and their families, and promote healthy lifestyles to prevent stroke.



Does a stroke originate from problems with brain blood vessels?

The medical term for stroke is "cerebral vascular disease"! Among stroke patients, 70-80% suffer from ischemic stroke, which is caused by a blood vessel blockage; another 20-30% suffer from hemorrhagic stroke, which is caused by a ruptured blood vessel. Stroke primarily occurs when blood vessels become blocked, hardened, or ruptured, impairing blood supply to the brain. However, each stroke's symptoms vary, and so does the recovery process.

 

Do stroke symptoms vary from person to person? Nine brain regions affected by stroke

  1. Frontal lobe - This area occupies approximately one-third of the brain. Symptoms of damage include movement disorders, impaired judgment, behavioral changes, aphasia, and swallowing difficulties.
  2. Parietal lobe - This area affects sensory functions, such as perception of heat and cold, pain, spatial perception, writing and reading difficulties, and speech difficulties.
  3. Temporal lobe - This area controls language comprehension and hearing. Common symptoms after a stroke include memory loss, mood swings, and difficulty understanding hearing, vision, and speech.
  4. Occipital lobe - Damage to this area can affect vision, such as impaired central vision, narrowed visual fields, and visual hallucinations.
  5. Brainstem - Made up of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. Common symptoms of brainstem stroke include coma, difficulty breathing, and dysphagia.
  6. Cerebellum - Responsible for controlling voluntary movements, particularly balance and coordination. Stroke symptoms include movement disorders, poor balance, and dizziness.
  7. Thalamus - 98% of sensory input is transmitted through the thalamus. Common symptoms include numbness, hemispatial neglect, and visual impairment.
  8. Basal ganglia - This is the area most commonly affected by hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage. Symptoms include emotional dullness, post-stroke depression, and movement disorders.
  9. Internal capsule - This is an area deep within the brain that primarily controls motor function. The most common symptom is movement disorders.

Motor Dysfunction: Stroke patients may experience varying degrees of paralysis or motor impairment, affecting areas such as the face, arms, legs, or half of the body.

TMS technology has been developed for over 30 years. The Hong Kong Hospital Authority has been using the first generation of rTMS generates a series of magnetic pulses that activate circuits in the cerebral cortex, regulating the function of specific brain regions. This enhances brain function and neuroplasticity, helping patients regain walking ability and improve speech. Dancer Li Qiyan (Mo), who was seriously injured in a concert accident at the Hong Kong Coliseum, also underwent rTMS therapy to stimulate limb mobility and activate uplink and downlink neural signals.
